E-bikes and pedelecs – buying advice, tips and training methods

E-bike, electric bicycle, pedelec, electric bike, EPAC (Electrically Power-Assisted Cycle) and LEV (Light Electric Vehicle) are names that are often used synonymously, often even for different types of bikes with an additional or built-in electric motor – and this can easily lead to confusion. The abbreviation "LEV" stands for "Light Electric Vehicle." This is therefore regarded as a generic term.

Pedelec is an abbreviation for "Pedal Electric Cycle." Pedalling is supported by an electric motor, and the degree of pedal assist is controlled either manually on the handlebars, or by a control unit that adjusts according to the pedalling effort. This depends on the vehicle.

In Germany, pedelec drivers are not required to wear a helmet, or have insurance or a driving license (with engine power limited to 250 W and cessation of support at 25 km/h). According to the StVO (the German road traffic regulations), they are classed as bikes. In Switzerland, they have to be insured as a bicycle.

Some pedelecs also feature a start assist function. Although they are propelled by using the pedals, they can accelerate immediately from a standstill up to about 6 km/h. If the acceleration is controlled using a handle or throttle lever on the handlebar, a moped test certificate is required (according to EU directives) for those born after 1 April 1965.

Folding bicycles:

Simply fold the 3 handles together and take it with you in the boot to save space. With folding e-bikes, you can maintain total the flexibility to go wherever you like on holiday or on city breaks, and keep fit at the same time. These are referred to as a folding bikes, or folding e-bikes.

    – Drive on cycle paths safely and quickly
    – Enjoyable cycling even on hills and in headwinds
    – Environmentally friendly and cost-effective, approx. € 1 per 100 km
